How to Convert Excel to Word? 2 Easy Methods

(Note: This guide on how to convert Excel to Word is suitable for all Excel versions including Office 365.)

Have you ever been in a situation where you needed to quickly convert an Excel document into a Word document, but could not find an easy solution. In some cases, you may want to present your Excel data in a report format, but find it challenging to move data from sheets to pages.

Don’t worry! You have come to the right place. In this article, I will show you two easy ways to convert Excel to Word.

How to Convert Excel to Word

1. Using Copy-Paste Method

This is an easy and simple way to convert an Excel file to a Word file. All you have to do is copy the contents from an Excel file and paste it into a Word file. 

If you have tables in your Excel, you can either just copy a part of the table or copy the whole table.

Select the content to copy. Right-click the selected content and click on Copy. Or, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + C to copy the contents.

The copied content appears with a moving dots animation.

Note: You can select the whole Excel table by clicking on the small triangle in the top left corner or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A.

Now, open an empty or existing Word document.

Right-click on the destination and click on Paste. Or, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + V.

This copies the data from the Excel sheet to the Word document.

You can now save the file as a Word document either by clicking on Ctrl + S or by navigating to File > Save. Then choose the destination and save the Word file.

Paste Options

While right-clicking on the destination to paste the contents, the paste function has some options enabled to it. They help in choosing our preference and formatting on how to copy the content to the Word file.

Using the first option, Keep Source Formatting pastes the content in the same format you have copied it from.

The second option, Use Destination Styles pastes the content onto the destination format.

The third (Link & Keep Source Formatting) and fourth (Link & Use Destination Styles) options are pretty much similar to the first and second options, respectively. These options are used to link the contents you copied from the Excel file onto a Word document. All the changes made in the content in Excel will be reflect in the Word document.

The fourth option Picture is used to paste the copied table as an image. Thereby, it cannot be changed or altered.

Finally, using the fifth option Keep Text Only pastes the copied table as text. This formatting option just pastes the text, without border center or tables,

Note: You can also paste the content onto a Word file by using the Paste option under Home > Clipboard. It also bears the same options to paste the content based on your formatting and preferences.

2. Using the Insert Tab

This is another easy method to convert an Excel file to a Word file.

Open a Word document.

Click on Insert in the menu bar. Under Text, click on Object.

This opens up a dialog box. Click on Create from File.

Choose the Excel document to be converted to a Word file and click on Okay.

Note: Check the Link to File checkbox to automatically update the data in the Word file. That is if any changes are made to the original Excel file the same changes will get reflected in the Word document.

This inserts and links the Excel file into the Word document.

Now, you can save the file as a Word document. Go to File > Save and save the file, or click on Ctrl + S to save the file on your device.

In this article, we saw two easy ways to convert content from an Excel file into a Word file. Use the Copy and Paste method to choose the formatting of the copied text, and use the Insert method to insert the Excel file onto the Word file. Choose the method which suits you best.
